Electric Adjustable Beds: A Guide

It can be difficult to know how to maintain an electric adjustable bed properly. Looking after your bed will extend its life, reducing the risk of any issues becoming bigger problems, so you can continue to get a great night’s sleep for years to come.

If you aren’t sure what to do, here are some top tips on maintaining an electric adjustable bed.

Ensure Electrics are in Good Condition

Adjustable beds feature electric components to function. You must get comfortable inspecting these components regularly to ensure they’re in a safe, working condition. Try to spot any loose connections or frayed wires, faulty electrics may also emit some buzzing noise, so try to listen out for that as you inspect.

As beds are usually pushed up against the wall, wires and plugs could be squeezed at angles that place stress on them. Try to arrange the external wiring in a safe manner that gives them enough room, so no pressure is being placed on them. This will allow the wires to function properly for longer and not take damage.

Due to electric adjusable beds needing to be plugged in, be sure to not overload the power socket you plug the bed into. Overloading a socket can cause damage to the plug, the wall socket, or even lead to a fire. Taking care of the electric will help to maintain your electric bed for longer!

Rotate Your Mattress

You should rotate the mattress on your electric bed regularly. If you’re unsure how often to rotate your mattress, once a month should be a good time period to aim for. Rotating the mattress will make sure one part of the mattress isn’t sustaining too much pressure. A lot of pressure is applied especially when you are sitting upright in the bed. Sitting too much on one spot could lead to depressions in the mattress. By rotating, you will allow time for these depressions to recover, letting your mattress stay comfortable for longer!

This will help to preserve both the mattress and the bed frame. A sunken mattress will place more pressure on the bed frame, leading to gradual damage.

Clean the Bed Regularly

A bed is the most important piece of furniture, so it’s important to keep it clean. To keep your electric adjustable bed hygienic, use a damp cloth to wipe down the frame. You can use a weak soap and water mixture to wipe off any stains or marks on the frame too. Be careful not to use too much water when cleaning, as you don’t want to damage any electrics. Be sure your damp cloth isn’t dripping water when wiping.

To clean your mattress, a mixture of water, baking soda and detergent sprayed to wipe down can help lift stains and smells! After wiping down, vacuum the mattress to remove any dirt or baking soda that remains.

Along with keeping a clean bed, regularly changing bedding will help to maintain a hygienic environment.

Reset the Bed to a Neutral Position

You should return the bed to a neutral position when you’re not using it. This relieves pressure on both the mattress and frame, helping them last longer.

Lubricate Joints

You may notice your electric adjustable bed start to squeak after some time. You can use a standard lubricant such as WD-40 to tackle this. Aim to lubricate the joints where frame parts connect and this should reduce the noise and allow the bed to function properly.

If you need advice on where to lubricate, our expert technicians are a phone call away to provide advice.

Use a Mattress Protector

Using a mattress protector is an effective way of prolonging the life of your mattress. These easy-to-fit protectors shield your mattress from dirt, stains and spills, and can even improve your comfort levels if you invest in a memory foam protector!
