How to Measure For a Riser Recliner Chair
It’s more difficult to select the right riser recliner for your needs than you might originally think. There are several factors to consider, including your budget, comfort, and the size and fit of your new chair. This is further complicated when a riser recliner is made to measure, but there are several reasons that you should always go for the personalised option.
Grosvenor Mobility has explored the reasons you should always invest in a chair that meets your exact specifications, as below.
Why Buy a Made to Measure Riser Recliner Chair
Mobility aids are often used for many hours at a time. This means that unless the chair is created to your exact specifications, several problems could arise. These range from the risk of sores through to making musculoskeletal problems, such as arthritis or back pain, worse.
Alternatively, a made-to-measure chair will promote good posture and reduce any strain on muscles and joints. This could lead to better well-being and a reduced risk of problems in the future. You can custom-design our range of chairs to include therapeutic features including built-in heat and massage. With your comfort at the centre of every chair, you can make spending a little extra a long-term investment.
As an added bonus, personally designing your own chair can greatly improve its aesthetics. This is why we’re proud to offer endless chair customisation combinations, with 250+ materials and colours available, 8 types of motors and mechanisms, 10 chair styles, 6 types of back cushions and 12 available extras… meaning there’s a total possible combination of 660,000 figurations, all before sizing!
Step-by-Step Measuring Guide
Grosvenor Mobility offers a free home trial service. During this time, one of our experienced demonstrators will take key measurements for your very own unique rise and recline chair. This is a no-obligation service, with all specifications and quotes held in value for 60 days. This will allow you to discuss with friends and family. However, if you want to learn how to measure your chair yourself, you can follow the below steps.
Before you begin, you need to gather your tools. To measure the right size chair for your needs, you’ll need a tape measure and a place to write down figures. You might also want to ask someone to assist you, especially if you’re impacted by low mobility.
The first figure you’ll need is the seat height. To do this, measure from the floor up to your knees. This will reveal your perfect seat height. Just make sure to do so while either barefoot or with your favourite pair of slippers on for a precise figure.
Now, you’ll want to measure seat depth. To do so, measure from your buttocks to the back of your knee. You’ll want to take 1-2 inches away to ensure the seat will be as comfortable as possible. This will also prevent the edge of the seat from rubbing or pressing against the back of your knee.
For the width of your seat, you need to take figures from the widest part of your body. Usually, this will be your hips or thighs. You’ll also want to add an inch or two to the final number to benefit from ease of movement without feeling restrained.
The back height of the chair can be determined by measuring from your buttocks through to the top of your head. This will ensure the top half of your chair will allow you to easily recline. If you’re selecting a chair with a shorter ‘body’, such as our fireside chair, you might want to measure to the top of your shoulders instead.
Finally, you’ll want to measure the space in your home. This step is vital to ensure that your new made to measure perfectly fits the rest of your space. Failure to do so could mean your chair is too large for the space. This could make travelling around your flat more difficult and your mobility chair could act as a trip hazard – making this step essential.
Common Mistakes When Measuring Your Riser Recliner
One of the most common mistakes when learning how to measure for a riser recliner chair is getting the figures incorrect. We recommend that you double check each figure and enlist an assistant. Measuring certain areas, such as your knees to your buttocks, can be awkward, meaning an extra set of hands can be very useful.
Plus, it’s important to reiterate that measuring your floor space is essential. Purchasing the wrong size chair will ruin the aesthetics of your living space or add trip hazards. Similarly, you’ll also want to measure the width of your doorway. It’s important that the chair fits into the room!
